Foreword
In today's fast-moving global marketplace, timely access to
meaningful and accurate information can make the difference
between profits and losses. So it's more important than ever to
maximize the efficiency and productivity of the computing
resources that manage this business critical information. The
catalyst to sustaining a competitive advantage is ensuring your
business strategy drives your information technology (IT)
strategy and implementation--not vice versa. This can only be
achieved by ensuring that the IT strategy is inherently flexible,
allowing your company to respond to the changes in your business
environment.
In addressing your IT strategy, the choice of strategic vendors
for your computer systems can be complex: different operating
systems, software architectures--and conflicting vendor
philosophies. As a business manager myself, I believe that, in
the final analysis, the system you choose is not going to be
successful solely because of its performance, innovative
technology, or software solutions. It must help you solve your
business problems.
Today, more and more leading companies are solving their business
problems through Open Systems.

Open Systems protect your investment in software, hardware, and
training. These systems also contribute to increases in
productivity and quality, ultimately transforming your business
into a prosperous enterprise. With seamless communications across
heterogeneous platforms, providing greater access to business
data and improving teamwork, open standards further help to
reduce costs and increase flexibility. You can integrate old and
new computer systems and choose innovative products from a
variety of vendors. What's more, with an open and flexible
information system, people can make faster, more effective
decisions. Consequently, your company can improve its
responsiveness to market conditions, which increases your
competitive position and impacts your bottom line.
HP is committed to Open Systems. As your information technology
partner, I believe our commitment distinguishes us from other
suppliers as clearly as the capabilities and quality of our
systems and services.
